Frequently Asked Questions

We realize that there can be a lot of questions, and we're happy to be a clear as possible. Check out a list of some of the most frequently asked questions below. If you have a question that you don't see in the list and you'd like answered, send it to us.

Q: I’m interested, where do I start?

A: The best way is just to come out to a worship gathering, see what we're all about, and get to know some people.

Q: What happens at your worship gatherings?

A: There is a great answer to that question here.

Q: Are you going to ask me for money?

A: No – We don’t “pass the hat” or ask folks those who are undecided about following Jesus to give in any way. Yes - Deep Water is supported by those who are followers of Jesus and consider it their home church. If that’s you, you can get more info here.

Q: What if I don’t believe the same as you and I just want to check it out?

A: We would love to have you! Deep Water is all about people who want to have a chance to come and check things out without being pressured to make some sort of decision or commitment. You are warmly welcomed to come and observe and, if you want to, participate. You will find others here who are doing the same thing.

Q: Where does the name Deep Water come from? What does it mean?

A: It’s sort of a metaphor for being a hardcore follower of Jesus. Back in the day thousands of people would come to hear Jesus preach and to watch him do miracles. Sometimes at the end of the day He would get into a boat and head across the lake. His closest disciples didn’t just sit on the shore and listen to Him, they would get right in the boat and travel out to the deep water. To us, Deep Water speaks of following Jesus anywhere, no matter what. It’s also a nice nod to our oceanside location and to the fact that most of the time we feel like we are in over our heads.

Q: How do I get my questions about God, Jesus, church, etc, answered?

A: You are welcome to come out to a worship gathering anytime or just sit down with AJ or Bradford sometime and talk. You can contact the office to set up a time.

Q: Why do you do this stuff?

A: We believe that Jesus is the hope of the world, and we want to help people become passionate followers of Him, and we want people who choose not to follow Him to be making an informed decision.

Q: Why do people sing at your gatherings?

A: Followers of Jesus have been singing together for centuries. We consider singing together about Jesus an act of worshiping Him. It might sound weird but it’s better than animal sacrifice. It’s totally fine if you choose not to participate in this (or any) part of our time together. The lyrics are projected on the screen should you choose to sing or if you would just like to follow along with the words.

Q: I already go to a church. Should I start coming here instead?

A: If you currently attend a solid Bible-believing church our recommendation is that you stay there and help it become the best it can be. If you are unable to continue attending that church (i.e. moved, can’t get there, it closed down, you have developed a life threatening allergy to stained glass, etc.) we welcome you to consider making Deep Water your new home.

Q: I don’t live in Halifax. Is there a way I can be involved in Deep Water?

A: Sure, move to Halifax. Seriously. It’s a great city. If that’s a bit much though you can always listen to the podcast. On top of that you can come visit us sometime, recommend us to any family or friends you have here, and pray for us regularly.

Q: Are you a connected to a particular denomination?

A: Yes. We are a member of The Atlantic District of the Wesleyan Church.

Q: Can you please give the technical theological mumbo jumbo for what kind of church you are?

A: Sure – We are Protestant, Evangelical (but not scary evangelical), and theologically Wesleyan with roots in traditional Methodism.
